Privacy notice
What Hi-There keeps about you, why, and how to get it removed.
Who is responsible
Hi-There is run by Abdullah Md Ayman, who is the controller of your personal data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Write to abdullahwasim42@gmail.com about anything on this page.
What we keep and why
- Your account: email address, name, username, password (stored scrambled) and, if you use them, the ids Google, Facebook or Apple give us. Needed to give you an account.
- Your profile: photo, bio, phone number, interests and languages, which people see on your profile as you choose.
- Private details: gender, date of birth and whether you're a parent. Only used to check that you're 18 or older and which events you can join; nobody sees them.
- Where you're from and your religion: kept only if you tick that you agree, only used to show you events for your community or faith, and never shown to anyone. Remove them under Preferences at any time; that also withdraws your consent.
- Your location: see “Your location” in the policy. We keep only the latest place you shared, never a history.
- What you do here: events you host or join, messages, comments, discussions, reviews, bookings and reports. Needed to run the service; messages are only seen by the people in the conversation, and by moderators when a message is reported.
- Push notifications: the address your browser gives us for each device where you turn them on.
- The weekly email of events near you uses the place you last shared or, once that's forgotten, the place of the last event you went to. Stop it from the link in the email or under Preferences → Notifications.
- Technical records: server logs with IP addresses and error reports, kept to keep the service working and safe.
The legal basis is our agreement with you (the terms) for running your account and events; your consent for where you're from, religion, location sharing and push notifications; and our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe (moderation, abuse limits, logs).
We don't sell your data and don't show ads.
Who else handles it
Only companies that help us run the service, under data processing agreements: our server host (Hetzner, servers in Finland), our email provider, and our error-reporting service. When you log in with Google, Facebook or Apple, they know you used Hi-There. Address search sends what you type to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim. When you verify your phone, our text message provider gets your number to send the code. Your data is kept in the EU.
How long
As long as you have an account. When you delete your account (Settings → Delete account) your data is deleted; copies in backups disappear within 30 days. Server logs are kept for up to 30 days.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, have it corrected or deleted, object to how we use it, or take it elsewhere: write to abdullahwasim42@gmail.com and we'll answer within a month. Most of it you can change or delete yourself under Preferences, and Preferences → Privacy & safety → Download my data gives you a copy straight away. If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman (tietosuoja.fi).
Cookies
We only use the cookies the site needs to work: keeping you logged in, protecting forms and remembering your language. No tracking or advertising cookies.
